Saint George

Great Martyr

April 23

Spiritual Significance

Saint George was born into a noble family. After the death of his father, his mother raised him in the Christian faith. When he grew older, George entered the Roman army and became a respected soldier.

At that time the Emperor Diocletian began a great persecution against Christians. George openly confessed that he was a follower of Christ. Rather than deny his faith, he gave his possessions to the poor and spoke boldly against the emperor’s cruelty. Because of this, George was arrested and suffered many tortures.

He remained firm in his faith and trusted in God through every trial. Many who witnessed his courage came to believe in Christ. In the end, Saint George was sentenced to death. Before his execution he prayed that God would bless those who remember him and ask for his prayers. The Church honours Saint George as a Great Martyr, remembering his courage, faith, and trust in Christ.

Iconography

In icons, Saint George is usually shown as a young soldier and martyr. He often wears military armour and a red cloak, symbolising his courage and his witness to Christ.
