Saint John the Theologian

Apostle and Evangelist

May 8

Spiritual Significance

Saint John the Theologian was one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ and the beloved disciple who followed the Lord closely during His earthly ministry. He was the brother of the Apostle James and the son of Zebedee.

Saint John was present at many important moments in the life of Christ. He witnessed the Transfiguration, stood at the foot of the Cross, and was entrusted by Christ with the care of the Mother of God. Because of his deep understanding of the mystery of Christ, the Church honours him with the title “Theologian.”

Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Saint John wrote the Gospel of John, three epistles, and the Book of Revelation. His Gospel speaks deeply about the divine nature of Christ and the love of God for humanity.

After many years of preaching and teaching the Gospel, Saint John reposed peacefully in the city of Ephesus. The Church remembers him as a great teacher of divine love and a faithful witness to Christ.

Iconography

In icons, Saint John the Theologian is often shown as an elderly man with a long white beard, reflecting his long life and spiritual wisdom.

He frequently holds a Gospel book or scroll, representing the Gospel he wrote and the teachings he gave to the Church.

Some icons show Saint John writing his Gospel while a symbolic angel whispers to him, reminding us that the Scriptures were written through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

His calm and thoughtful expression reflects his role as a teacher of the mystery of Christ and the love of God.

Did You Know?

On 8 May, the Church remembers a miracle connected with Saint John’s tomb in Ephesus.

Each year, a fine dust called “manna” was said to rise from the place where Saint John was buried. Many believers gathered to collect this dust, which was believed to bring healing to the sick.

Because of this miracle, the Church celebrates a special feast known as the “Miracle of the Manna from the Tomb of Saint John the Theologian.”
