Spiritual Significance
Saint Sophia and her three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love, are remembered by the Orthodox Church for their extraordinary courage, faith and love for Christ. Their lives remind us that Christian faith is not only something we believe, but something we are called to live with courage and devotion.
Saint Sophia was a Christian mother who taught her daughters to love God and remain faithful to Christ. When they were brought before the authorities and ordered to deny their faith, each of the young girls remained steadfast and refused to turn away from Christ.
Their example reminds us of the words of Saint Paul, that “faith, hope and love abide,” and that love is the greatest of these. These three virtues are at the heart of the Christian life and are gifts which every Christian is called to cultivate through prayer, humility and love for God and for others.
Saint Sophia also showed great spiritual courage as a mother. Although she suffered deeply as she witnessed the martyrdom of her children, she encouraged them to remain faithful to Christ. Her example reminds Orthodox Christian parents of the sacred responsibility of guiding their children in the faith and teaching them, through both words and example, to know and love God.
The four saints therefore give us a powerful example of faith within the family. Saint Sophia and her daughters teach us that, whatever our age or circumstances, we can remain faithful to Christ and place our trust in Him.
Through their witness, the Church remembers that true wisdom is found in knowing God, and that faith, hope and love can give us strength to remain close to Christ even in times of suffering and difficulty.
Iconography
In icons, Saint Sophia is usually shown together with her three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love, reminding us of the remarkable faith and courage shared by this Christian mother and her children.
The four saints are often shown wearing richly coloured garments with halos around their heads. The halos signify their holiness and their eternal life with God in His heavenly Kingdom.
Faith, Hope and Love are frequently shown holding crosses in their hands. These crosses are symbols of their martyrdom and remind us that, even when faced with suffering and death, they refused to abandon their faith in Christ.
Saint Sophia is often shown standing beside or behind her daughters as their mother and spiritual guide. Her presence reminds us of the important responsibility parents have to teach their children about God and encourage them in the Christian faith.
Together, Saint Sophia and her daughters represent wisdom, faith, hope and love. Their icon reminds Christians that these virtues are not simply words, but qualities that we are called to practise throughout our lives.
Did You Know?
The name Sophia comes from the Greek word for “wisdom.” Her daughters’ names are also the three great Christian virtues: Faith (Pistis), Hope (Elpis) and Love (Agape).
Faith was twelve years old, Hope was ten and Love was only nine when they were martyred. Despite their young ages, the Church remembers their extraordinary courage and devotion to Christ.
