Myrrh-bearer

Saint Mary Magdalene

She came from Magdala, a town on the shore of Lake Gennesaret in Galilee, and from this place she received the name by which she is known.

Deliverance and New Life

The Gospel tells us that Mary Magdalene had been tormented by seven demons, from which she was delivered by the Lord Jesus Christ. From that moment, her life was completely changed.

Having been healed by Christ, she became one of His most faithful followers. She left behind her former life and devoted herself entirely to serving the Lord. Together with other devoted women, she accompanied Christ and the Apostles as they travelled through the towns and villages preaching the Kingdom of God.

Mary Magdalene’s life is a powerful witness to repentance, renewal, and the transforming mercy of God. Having been brought from darkness into light, she never turned back.

Faithfulness at the Cross

When many fled in fear during the Passion of Christ, Mary Magdalene remained steadfast. She stood at Golgotha beneath the Cross, grieving with the Mother of God and the beloved disciple John.

She was present not only during the Lord’s suffering, but also at His burial. She watched as His body was laid in the tomb and as the stone was rolled across its entrance.

Her love for Christ was not shaken by His humiliation, suffering, or death. She remained faithful when others lost heart.

Witness of the Resurrection

On the first day of the week, before dawn, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb carrying spices to anoint the Lord’s body. Seeing that the stone had been rolled away, she ran to tell the Apostles Peter and John.

After they came and departed, Mary remained at the tomb weeping. There she saw two angels, and soon after, the risen Christ Himself appeared to her. At first she did not recognise Him, thinking He was the gardener. But when He spoke her name, she knew Him at once and cried out, “Rabbi!”

Christ then sent her to tell the Apostles the good news of His Resurrection.

In this way, Mary Magdalene became the first witness of the Resurrection and the first to proclaim it, saying:

“I have seen the Lord.”

For this reason, the Church honours her as Equal to the Apostles, for she was entrusted with the apostolic message of the Resurrection itself.

Preaching the Gospel

Holy Tradition tells us that after the Ascension of Christ, Mary Magdalene continued in prayer with the Apostles and the Mother of God. When the Apostles later went out to preach throughout the world, she too took up the work of proclaiming the Gospel.

Tradition says that she travelled as far as Rome, where she appeared before Emperor Tiberius and boldly proclaimed the Resurrection of Christ. Presenting him with a red egg, she greeted him with the words:

“Christ is Risen!”

This act is closely linked with the Christian custom of giving red Paschal eggs as a sign of the Resurrection and new life in Christ.

Mary Magdalene is also said to have spoken to the emperor concerning the injustice of Christ’s condemnation, denouncing the actions of Pontius Pilate.

Final Years

According to Church tradition, Saint Mary Magdalene later travelled to Ephesus, where she assisted Saint John the Theologian in the preaching of the Gospel.

There she spent the final years of her earthly life in faithful service to Christ and the Church. She reposed peacefully in Ephesus, and her relics were later translated to Constantinople.

Legacy

Saint Mary Magdalene is a model of repentance, loyalty, and apostolic courage. She was among the first to follow Christ closely, among the last to leave Him at the Cross, and the first to proclaim that He had risen from the dead.

Her life shows that the grace of God can completely renew a person. One who had once suffered grievously became a herald of the Resurrection and a witness to the victory of Christ over sin and death.

The Church honours her not simply for what she received from Christ, but for how faithfully she responded to that gift with love, devotion, and bold witness.

Through the prayers of Saint Mary Magdalene, may we remain faithful to Christ in sorrow and in joy, and may we proclaim with courage the truth of His Resurrection.
