St Nicholas

Archbishop of Myra in Lycia

Commemorated on December 6

Saint Nicholas was born in Patara in Lycia to devout parents, Theophanes and Nonna, who had long prayed for a child. From infancy he was dedicated to God. Tradition records that even as a newborn he revealed signs of grace, and from childhood he loved the Church and the study of Holy Scripture.

He was ordained priest and later chosen as Archbishop of Myra through divine providence. The bishops had prayed that God would reveal the next shepherd, and it was Nicholas, the first to enter the church that morning, who was appointed.

As bishop, he became known for mercy, boldness, and pastoral care. He secretly provided dowries for three impoverished sisters, saving them from moral ruin. He delivered innocent men unjustly condemned to death by seizing the executioner’s sword. He calmed storms at sea and rescued sailors in distress. He appeared in dreams to rulers and corrected injustice.

He was present at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325. Hearing the blasphemy of Arius against Christ, he rebuked him zealously. Though temporarily disciplined for striking Arius, Christ and the Theotokos appeared in a vision to certain bishops, restoring his episcopal insignia, revealing that his action was born of holy zeal for the truth.

Saint Nicholas combined gentleness with courage. He was known as a defender of the poor, protector of travelers, helper of prisoners, and guardian of those in danger at sea. His compassion extended to both body and soul.

He reposed peacefully around the year 330. His relics were found to be incorrupt and flowed with fragrant myrrh, healing the sick. In 1087, his relics were transferred to Bari in Italy, where they remain a source of pilgrimage and devotion.

Saint Nicholas remains one of the most beloved saints in the Christian world. His life teaches us that true authority is expressed through humility, generosity, and fearless defense of the faith.

Through his prayers, may we learn mercy toward the needy, courage in defending truth, and trust in the providence of God.
