St Kyriaki
Great Martyr
Commemorated on July 7
Saint Kyriaki was born in Nicomedia to devout Christian parents, Dorotheus and Eusebia. Because she was born on a Sunday - the Lord’s Day -she was given the name Kyriaki, which means “belonging to the Lord.”
From her youth she dedicated herself entirely to Christ. Though she was young, beautiful, and from a wealthy family, she desired neither marriage nor worldly comfort. She resolved to remain a virgin, offering her life to God.
A powerful magistrate sought to arrange her marriage to his son, partly to secure control of her family’s wealth. When Saint Kyriaki refused, openly confessing that she belonged to Christ, he denounced her and her parents as Christians during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian.
Her parents were beaten and exiled. Kyriaki herself was brought before rulers who attempted to persuade her with promises of wealth, status, and safety if she would worship the pagan gods. She refused firmly and without hesitation.
She was flogged repeatedly. She was suspended and burned with torches. She was imprisoned. Yet throughout her suffering she remained unwavering. According to tradition, Christ appeared to her in prison and healed her wounds, strengthening her for what was to come.
When brought into a pagan temple to offer sacrifice, she instead prayed that God would reveal the emptiness of the idols. An earthquake struck, and the statues fell and shattered. Those who witnessed this were thrown into confusion, but the authorities hardened their hearts.
She was cast into fire, yet the flames did not harm her. She was thrown to wild beasts, but they became gentle. Finally, she was sentenced to death by beheading. Granted time to pray, she commended her soul to God. According to tradition, she peacefully surrendered her spirit before the sword could fall.
Saint Kyriaki’s life reflects the strength of spiritual resolve. Though young and physically vulnerable, she possessed unwavering courage. Her name, “belonging to the Lord,” was not only given at birth—it defined her entire life.
She teaches us that faithfulness is not determined by age or circumstance. The strength of a Christian does not lie in physical power, but in steadfast love for Christ.
Through her prayers, may we learn to belong wholly to the Lord, guarding our hearts from compromise and remaining faithful in every trial.
