St Sofia

Mother of Faith, Hope & Love

Commemorated on September 17

Saint Sophia lived in Rome during the second century, in the reign of Emperor Hadrian. She was a pious Christian widow and the mother of three daughters whom she named Faith, Hope, and Love—after the three great Christian virtues.

From an early age, Sophia raised her children in devotion to Christ. She did not hide her faith, nor did she teach her daughters to do so. Their Christian life was visible, sincere, and courageous.

When they were denounced to the authorities, they were brought before the emperor. Faith was twelve years old, Hope ten, and Love nine. Though young in years, they stood before the emperor with remarkable composure. He attempted to persuade them to offer sacrifice to pagan idols, promising favour if they complied. Each refused firmly.

The girls were subjected to brutal tortures. They were burned, beaten, and tormented in various ways, yet they remained steadfast. Their mother was forced to witness their suffering. Instead of collapsing in despair, Sophia strengthened her daughters, urging them to endure for the sake of Christ.

One by one, the three young martyrs were beheaded. They received their crowns in faithfulness, confessing Christ to the end.

The emperor permitted Sophia to take the bodies of her daughters. She buried them outside the city and remained at their grave for three days, mourning yet praying. There, overwhelmed with sorrow yet strengthened by hope, she surrendered her soul to the Lord. Though she was not executed, the Church counts her among the martyrs, for she endured the deepest suffering of a mother’s heart.

Saint Sophia’s life teaches us that Christian wisdom is not found in worldly achievement, but in steadfast trust in God. Her name means “Wisdom,” and she lived that wisdom through faithfulness under trial.

Her daughters remind us that holiness is not limited by age. Even children can become courageous witnesses to Christ. Their names—Faith, Hope, and Love—remain at the heart of Christian life.

Saint Sophia stands as an image of spiritual motherhood: guiding, strengthening, and remaining faithful even in unbearable sorrow.

Through her prayers, may we be rooted in true wisdom, steadfast in faith, patient in hope, and unwavering in love.
